coastal U16 girls -Battle for second place with the West Coast Capitals PDF  | Print |  E-mail

After dropping a heartbreaking 2-1 home loss to the front running Surrey WFC girls the day before, Coastal prepared for a away and home two game match up with the undefeated West Coast Capitals.  The first game was played on June 14,  at Finlayson Park in Victoria on a blistering hot afternoon.  It was a classic battle with both teams playing hard to break into their tie in the standings.  At the 30 minute mark Jessica Misak was awarded a penalty kick outside the 18 yard box. Newcomer Chiara Quatri stepped up and hit a perfect shot off the far post and into the net, to spot the away team to a 1-0 lead. West Coast Capitals did not take long to even the score.  The two teams battled hard in the second half with both coaches going for the win.  Chances at both ends were thwarted by excellent goal keeping.  Nikki Burge for Coastal made a great run at the end of the game, however was not rewarded with a goal.  Alex Narduzzi was chosen, as the player of the game for Coastal, for her efforts heading the ball out of harms way on numerous occasions.

The second game was played on June 20.  Again the physical toughness of the teams was on display the entire game.  Midfielder Briana Theilmann, battled their strongest players in the middle of the field the entire match, giving up little ground.  Coastal had the better chances in the first half, however a late surge by Victoria in the 35th minute of the second half, resulted in two cross bars. An excellent save by Katrina Pearson - Thomas near the far post was made with minutes to go to preserve the 0-0 draw.  Lindsay Rea, Lucky Shergill, and Jenaya French were selected by the Victoria coach for outstanding play.  The two teams head into the remaining third of the season tied in points for second place in the standings, with West Coast having a game in hand. Both are chasing the SurreyWFC team who have a few points to give up.  The top two teams qualify for the year end tournament in Florida.

Coastal U13 G vs Coquitlam Metro-Ford – July 11, 2009 PDF  | Print |  E-mail

After dropping five points in two games Coastal’s goal of Florida in November was at real risk! The weather was warm at the start in the sun, but a stiff breeze was blowing across the pitch. Coastal made much of the initial running with Maddie’s and Ashley j combining for Ravneet to send in a long range effort on the two minute mark – this was comfortably gathered and cleared. Coquitlam forced a corner on the three minute mark and Ashley J provided the clearance. Coastal were winning the private battles as the clouds moved in the temperature dropped! On the sixteen minute mark Maddie played a long ball for Janna – her shot from the top of the box was just wide to the left. Coastal continued to exert pressure with Sophie missing high from Janna’s cross on the twenty-third minute. A couple of minutes later Coastal were awarded a free kick at the top of the box – Maddie’s drive was too high – goal kick. Coastal continued to work hard and had a number of attempts as the half wound down and the half finished up scoreless.

The wind had picked up and it was cold – most parents scurried to their cars at the break looking for jackets or whatever to keep the cold at bay. Again Coastal pressured with the Coquitlam defence working hard to contain the Coastal attack. On the fourteen minute mark Ravneet and Janna combined to feed Sophie whose shot was well saved but generated a corner. On the nineteen minute mark Janna and Ashley J combined down the right – Sophie gathered Ashley’s cross and beat the keeper with her shot – Coastal 1 – 0 Coquitlam.

A minute later and Sophie came close to scoring again missing left with her header attempt from Ravneet’s cross. Ashley C did well on the twenty-sixth minute to keep Coquitlam out. Coastal were awarded a free kick on the edge of the box – Sophie’s strike was just too high. With time running down Coquitlam worked hard to level the score, but the Coastal defence held.

Players and parents alike were glad of the final whistle and quickly hurried off for the warmth of cars and trucks – final score Coastal 1 – 0 Coquitlam.

Coastal U13 G @ Surrey – July 9, 2009 PDF  | Print |  E-mail

Unlike the Abbotsford game – the skies were clear and the temp much warmer. Coastal started well with Ashley J creating space down the right, her cross was a little too deep and Surrey were able to clear. Surrey clearly looking for a better result than last time the two team met applied the early pressure and Joscelyn’s first action come on the two minute mark as she gathered a long range attempt. On the three minute mark Ravneet and Ashley J combined to force a corner but the girls were not able to finish. After the initial minutes the game settled into a mid field battle – Surrey with the wind behind them were able to clear more effectively and maintain pressure on the Coastal team. Surrey were also starting to win the one on one battles. Coastal were missing Maddie’s central command in the middle!

Coastal were generating attacks – Sarah, Ravneet, Sophie and Ashley J combined on the twelve minute mark to force a corner. Moments later Surrey were on the attack and forced a corner on the counter attack. On the fourteen minute mark Coastal were awarded a free kick – Kate took the kick, Sophie back headed the ball on and Surrey scrambled to clear for a throw in. Solid physical challenges in the midfield and Surrey looking dangerous on their attacks. Ravneet and Ashley J again combined on the sixteen minute mark to force a corner, again Surrey were able to clear. On the seventeen minute mark Surrey’s mid-field sent Sienna in on Joscelyn with a lovely through ball. Joscelyn came out to challenge and Sienna fired low to her left under Joscelyn’s dive to score in the corner – Coastal 0 – 1 Surrey.

One minute later and Beth Anne’s cover defence saved another one on one opportunity for Surrey with her cover tackle going out. Coastal were able to clear the following corner. On the nineteen minute mark Ashley J had a good run down the right and delivered a cross – Surrey’s keeper did well as Sophie came in hard on the challenge. On the twenty-three minute mark Surrey pumped a very high ball into the box – Joscelyn did well to take the ball high under pressure from the Surrey attack. Moments later Surrey were called for off-side. Surrey continue to look dangerous – especially on the counter attack. Surrey continued to press and Joscelyn was keep busy from long range shots and corners. With time in the half running down, Kate had to leave the field after a knock on her nose (broken) and Coastal were down to ten players as all of the players on the bench had already been on in that half. With the defence out of sorts Surrey had another attack and Sienna was half stopped, the ball was not cleared and Sienna was able to poke it home for a second goal as time expired – Coastal 0 – 2 Surrey.

Coastal started the second half with much more urgency (and the wind) – Ashley J producing a cross in front of the Surrey goal in the first minute. From Coastal’s pressure Surrey were able to again counter attack and Sienna ran onto a through ball around mid field, beat two defenders before sending a great shot high to the left of Kylee for her hat trick – Coastal 0 – 3 – Surrey.

Surrey continued to press and Kylee gathered the long range effort a minute later. On the ten minute mark Sienna again was a focus on the Surrey attack – this time drawing the defence and laying off for her team mate – who shot wide right. A minute later Coastal were on the attack with Gabbie and Janna working to force a corner. The corner was half cleared by Surrey and Gabbie’s shot drifted wide. Coastal were finally finding connections and the Surrey keep did well to save from Gabbie on the fourteen minute mark. On the seventeen minute mark Surrey sent another through ball for Sienna to chase and Kylee did well to come out of her box to clear. A minute later Coastal were awarded a free kick on the half way line. Janna challenged for the ball and ended up falling on top of the Surrey keeper. Surrey kept the pressure coming and Kylee did well on the twenty minute mark to save a high shot from the top of the box. Coastal were starting to really pressure now and the break finally came on the twenty-sixth minute - Gabbie had a good run down the left, her cross was half cleared and gathered by Ashley J who found Sophie in space who banged it home – Coastal 1 – 3 Surrey.

On the thirty minute mark Surrey came close to putting the game away – a broken play in the Coastal box and Natalia’s shot missed wide right. With time running out Coastal continued to work hard and on the thirty-fourth minute Gabbie’s left foot volley was very well saved by the Surrey keeper. Aisha took the corner and Sophie drove home – Coastal 2 – 3 Surrey.

With time nearly out Ashley J sent a lobbed through ball for Janna to chase – the Surrey keeper was alert and came out of her box to clear – game over.

Coastal FC is proud to announce our 2010 coaching staff.

Coastal will continue to build on our previous successes.  With five team qualifying for the 2009 North American Champinships and two of those team winning the championship outright our 2010 teams have some large shoes to fill.  Our 2010 coaching staff bring with them a strong tradition of player development and success at the highest levels of the game which will ensure Coastal is continued to be recognized for our contribution to the player development landscape.

Michael Perucho lead our 2009 U13 Boys team to a North American Championship appearance last season and is prepared to do so again this year.  As head coach of our U12 and U13 boys teams, Michael has the responsibility of building our success for the future.  His ability to develop players in both the technical and psychological aspects of the game will leave Coastal well positioned to compete with the best as this age group moves through the system.

John Matei, who assisted Perucho in last year's successful U13 season, will continue to build on the successful environment created last year with his appointment as our U14 Boys head coach.  John has an extensive background of building success that will prove effective as the U14 boys look to improve on last year's placement.

Our U15 Boys will be under the guidance of Yuri Vasilevski this season.  Yuri's knowledge of the game is surpassed only by his enthusiasm for it.  Yuri joins us from the Vancouver FC program where he is the head coach of their boys U16 program.  As a former professional player with experience in the highest level of European competition Yuri will help our players understand what it take to compete at the next level.

Our U16 boys will be lead by Sam Vasilik, another quality coach from the Vancouver FC program.  A former professional play from Iran, Sam has extensive experience with guiding elite teams to success at multiple regional and national competitions and will ensure our boys are well prepared to challenge for the same.

Mark Pennington will move over to guide our U12 and U13 girls this season.  Mark is a structured and organized coach who can instil a clear vision of success within each of his players.  This ability, matched with his competitive and challenging training environment is ideal fit for developing the future of Coastal FC.

Gregor Young guided our 2009 U13 Girls team to a North American Championship appearance and is poised to build on that success again this year.  Gregor returns for his 4th year with Coastal and bring with him an excellent background in player development that is well geared towards this age group.

After a very successful 2009 season our U15 girls will be under the guidance of former and long standing provincial team coach George Pacheco.  George has been an assistant coach for the U14 Girls provincial teams program for a number of years and is very knowledgeable when it comes to the U15 age group.  His ability to lead teams to success at the national level will certainly help our girls build on their successes from last season.

Gary Moody will be leading our U16 Girls this season.  He was head coach of the 2009 U15 Girls Provincial team and saw them through to the Western Canadian games.  His depth of knowledge with this age group across the province is unmatched and his ability to instil the habits of success into his players will ensure a successful season for our girls in their final Y League season.
